We have time to recover. America did NOT lose its financial future on September 11, 2001. It may take a while for our financial system to recover in a physical sense. But let's put things in perspective. OVER THE LONG RUN you should make money in a broadly diversified portfolio. In fact, there has never been a 20-year period-going back to 1926-where you would have lost money investing in America's largest companies. Today is no different - notwithstanding the huge tragedy of the World Trade Center. There have been a number of times in the past 75 years when America's future looked bleak. But great adversity has always pulled Americans together. We are a nation of survivors. We've survived internal threats like the Depression, external threats like World War II, economic threats like OPEC oil embargoes in the 1970's and currency threats like the long-term Capital/Russian crisis of 1948. It's in our genes, no matter how our forefathers arrived on these shores. We survive. And so will our system. This is the lesson of history: It doesn't pay to bet against America.
